Over the decades of its history people of Palestine have been searching for their rights and freedoms through every means they could effort. However, when the Palestinian Liberation Organization failed in presenting an effective challenge to the political and economic independence of its society, the Palestinians turned their faces towards a new hope: Hamas.
Hamas or Islamic Resistance Movement was endorsed as an alternative to the Palestine National Movement under Yasser Arafat in the dawn of the First Intifadah, in 1987. Hamas increased its popularity among the poor and the young by sponsoring an extensive social service network and conducting an armed struggle through militant attacks against Israeli targets. These empowered Hamas’s reputation within the Palestinian society that was disillusioned with false hopes.
The tragedy of September 11 in 2001 shifted the focus of the World on the radical Islam and Hamas’s political challenge in Palestine. By the year 2006, Hamas was more than a terrorist, militant organization. It became a political entity with high popularity rate among the younger generation of Palestinians. Hamas’s rise followed by its unexpected 2006 victory set the stage for a power struggle against Fatah, the party of the charismatic leader of the Palestinian National Movement Yasser Arafat which was inherited by Mahmoud Abbas pursuing his death.
The purpose of this research is to analyze and understand the components of the radical Islamic movement in Palestinian society that identified itself through Hamas and its transformation from a militant movement to a political party within the period of 2001 to 2006 national elections.
